Changing perspectives. Changing lives.

The power of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program is in providing one-to-one friendship to a child. A first ballgame, a heart-to-heart talk or a milk-through-the-nose laugh might not seem Earth-shattering, but the power of that moment can be life-altering and truly part of something BIG.

To provide one-to-one friendship, guidance, and opportunities to children and youth, building their strengths, and assisting them in becoming more confident, competent, and caring individuals.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Vision

Successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them…contributing to BETTER SCHOOLS, BRIGHTER FUTURES, and STRONGER COMMUNITIES FOR ALL.

The Traditional Community-Based Mentoring Program

The Traditional Program is a community-based program serving children and youth. Volunteers from the community positively affect a child’s life by sharing their time on a one-to-one basis with that child. If you would like to help one special child meet the challenges of growing up, your are an ideal candidate to be a “Big.” Every effort is made to place you with a child who shares similar interests — your “Match.” Activities are chosen by the Match and can be simple…walking in the park, sledding, cooking a meal or just spending time together.

If you and your spouse would like to share some time together with a child, you may be ideal for a Couples Match, or if you have children and wish to include them, you can participate in a Family Match. These options offer an enriching family experience providing guidance and friendship to help build a child’s strengths.

High Five Mentoring

High Five Mentoring is a school-based program that matches high school mentors to elementary school students who are referred to the program by their teachers. The one-to-one Matches meet once a week during a class period at school. Big Brothers Big Sisters implements the program within the school system and provides training, supervision and ongoing support to the mentors. Academics serve as the vehicle to developing a consistent relationship based on friendship, which has been proven to positively influence the elementary school students’ self-esteem, academic performance and attitude toward school. In addition, the mentor benefits from an improved sense of self-worth and an improved attitude toward community service.

TEAM Mentoring

TEAM Mentoring is a collaborative approach in which Big Brothers Big Sisters partners with youth-serving organizations and other groups to deliver site-based mentoring programs throughout our communities. Each group determines specific guidelines for its contributions to the program, whether they provide volunteer mentors, children to participate in mentoring, and/or a facility to house the mentoring sessions. With guidance and ongoing support from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, church groups, service organizations, fraternities, sororities and businesses can deliver mentoring programs within their organization. TEAM Mentoring provides a creative and safe environment for children and volunteers to meet and establish ongoing relationships.
